The October Big Data Bucharest Meetup brings forward 2 interesting subjects: Data Lakes and Logs ingestion/pipeline. If you are interested in performance and reliability trade-offs when building a pipeline for log analytics, or you fancy Data Lakes and you want to know more about the their architecture and the challenges they bring, then you should not miss this meetup! So RSVP here and save your front row spot on October 10, starting 6:30 PM!

About the event

Radu’s session will focus on the performance and reliability trade-offs while building a pipeline for log analytics. The context will be pushing data to a search engine (Elasticsearch/Solr), where it often happens that the pipeline takes more resources than the storage. The tools discussed during this presentation will be Logstash, rsyslog, Beats and Kafka. None of them is limited to logs (e.g. can be used for metrics) and they’re not limited to Elasticsearch/Solr either, so we encourage you to bring your own big data use-case.

Cristina will talk about common architectures and challenges encountered while building Data Lakes using open source tools. Companies are choosing this strategy to democratize access to data, data usually stored in enterprise data warehouses that are managed/accessed/operated mainly by IT professionals. She will also show you some Data Lake implementations, developed in production using the Hadoop ecosystem technologies.

Event agenda

18:30 – 19:00 Gathering & socializing

19:00 – 19:40 Efficient pipelines for logs, metrics and the like, Radu Gheorghe @ Sematext

The Internet: before and after Upload Filter

Internet is freedom. But it seems that won’t last for long. The European Commission is planning to limit the freedom of speech by implementing automated upload filters for all content. What does this mean for Internet users and online platforms? How will the Internet look like in 2020 if this law gets adopted? What’s at stake for the Romanian digital business market? RSVP here to save your front row place on October 6, starting 2:00 PM and find out more!

About the event

The new copyright law includes in Article 13 requirements that all sites and platforms where users generate content (Reddit, Tumblr, Github, etc) must build censorship algorithms that monitor and block your content if it looks like it infringes copyright. The plan also includes unprecedented new powers for media giants to charge fees for linking to their content.

This event is the first of a series of two. While this round table discussion is dedicated for tech companies and Internet users, the second event on October 13 will present you ApTI’s copyright reform video campaign.

In September, ApTI launched a video campaign expressing different views on the copyright reform proposal and its implications. They are gradually releasing their 10 video series and you can find more information on the campaign website.

The speakers invited are Christian China Birta (Kooperativa 2.0), Andrei Radu (CEO E-Commerce Awards Gala & Co-Founder TRUSTED.ro) and other entrepreneurs, tech professionals, online platforms, experts in EU policy and active digital citizens to debate Article 13 of the proposal for a copyright directive.
