Join us for an informal chat over coffee and cake where we will be welcoming Joanna Smith and Hannah Williamson from Edge Investments.

Edge Investments is a specialist investment house focused on the creative industries sector, in particular media and entertainment, which has raised more than £145m since launch. Edge Investments is focused on delivering growth capital to emerging companies. They generally invest £500k to £5m as growth capital in businesses which:-

  • are in their identified sectors – the creative industries and the technologies that power them
  • have proven management
  • have existing revenues of in excess of £1m pa
  • which are profitable or have reasonable visibility over profits in the near term
  • require a total round of £500k to £5m
  • have the capability to scale rapidly to build earnings and value in 2-7 years
  • with an exit route in 5-7 years
  • which are capable of generating a return of at least 3x money within a five year period.

and where Edge can add value to enhance returns. Edge can invest worldwide but they look for businesses with some UK presence/angle.

Joanna Smith (Investment Manager) ACA, has spent her career in finance both in practice at PwC and then in an investment role at Channel 4 and is an Investment Manager at Edge Investments.

Joanna attained a 2:1 degree from Oxford University and started her career at PriceWaterhouseCoopers where she trained as an accountant, working on clients in the entertainment and media sector such as Fremantle Media, MTV and Walt Disney. In 2012, she joined Channel 4 as an analyst where she worked on their existing venture capital portfolio and subsequently helped launch the £20 million C4 Indie Growth Fund. In 2014 she became Corporate Development Manager of the Indie Growth Fund and Film4. In 2015 Joanna became Corporate Development Manager Investments with responsibility over all investment activity at Channel 4, including the new Commercial Growth Fund, which offers discounted advertising airtime for equity in early stage businesses. She joined Edge in early 2016.

Hannah Williamson (Associate) joined Edge in 2015, her role includes supporting the Investment Team with deal flow generation and assessment, particularly focusing on retail tech and content businesses.

Prior to Edge, Hannah worked at the online retailer ASOS for 3 years, within the operational side of the business. Hannah holds a first-class honours degree in Fashion and Textile Management from Nottingham Trent University.

L Marks are an innovation agency and early-stage investor, connecting brands who want to innovate with young companies building disruptive tech who want to grow their business. Since their launch in 2014, they’ve launched 23 programmes with 20 clients, including some of the world’s biggest brands like International Airlines Group, BMW and John Lewis. 50% of the startups they’ve connected to corporates have progressed to pilots or trials, and they’ve given over £3 million in investment.

Matteo is working closely with the Chief Investment Officer, ensuring we make the smartest investments and support our portfolio in their growth. His previous role in L Marks was Head of Startup Support, where he leveraged his broad experience of the startup world, having led business development projects for venture-backed technology companies. He has worked with numerous startups and supported them from due diligence to further investment.

Mina’s role at L Marks is to scout and establish relationships with market-leading startups and connect them with brands such as IAG, BMW, EDF. Mina is passionate about connecting and working closely with the startup ecosystem, and she has previously worked at different corporate accelerators.

Columbia Lake Partners (CLP) is a London-based venture debt fund focused on providing growth loans to European technology companies. Typical transactions entail 36-month amortising loans of €1-10mm in size to Series A/B/C companies. The CLP team strives to change the venture debt industry through its transparency and educational approach.

This roundtable discussion will explore topics, including:

Stephanie Opdam joined CLP in 2015. She is responsible for the screening of investment opportunities, due diligence, structuring and portfolio management. Prior, Stephanie obtained a MSc degree in Finance & Private Equity from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). In her free time, Stephanie pursues water sports, reads up on the latest start-up/founder news and engages in pro-bono work.

Shaneel recently joined CLP from PwC, where he was primarily responsible for deal strategy and operations across a range of sectors. Shaneel obtained a MSc degree in Finance & Private Equity from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He is an avid Arsenal fan, semi-qualified sommelier and is passionate about all things tech-related.
